The school NMHSB is an 11 to 16 comprehensive school. A recent Oftsed report confirms the school is making progress and comments can be viewed by clicking here. ( Recent Ofsted comments.) There are excellent facilities for Design, Art, Science, ICT and Physical Education. The library has been converted into a modern, multimedia resource centre. Music and Drama are being developed and the 'Excellence in Cities' initiative will bring massive extra resources into the school, especially for ICT.

Achievements At NMHSB we value achievement very highly. Achievement is attached within and beyond the formal curriculum. The results in the GCSE examinations rose significantly from 5 per cent to 18 per cent, while the proportion of pupils gaining five or more grades A* to G rose by two per cent and the proportion of pupils gaining one or more grades A* to G rose by ten per cent to 84 per cent.

Extra~curricular achievement Our excellent Astro-turf pitch and sports hall has produced lots of success; Northern Area Champions and National runners up in the Snickers 5 a side football; County U16 football champions 1999 and the boys have represented the City in many sports and England in Athletics and Lacrosse. Other achievements include winners of the Manchester University Institute of materials science competition, Natwest Bank environmental winners, local "kick racism out of football" poster competition winners andan environmental award for the suberb Art garden.

The curriculum The curriculum offered is kept under constant review. Our aim is not only to deliver the National Curriculum but to also enrich it with other subjects or opportunities which we believe will be suited to the development of the boys. For more information on subjects and who to contact at the school click here. ( Subjects)

Special needs We believe that all pupils should be valued for who they are and what they can achieve. We are committed to ensuring that all pupils are given access to the curriculum and achieve at the highest level they are able to attain. For further information or a full SEN document contact B. Fraser at school.

The "more able" The school has a well developed programme for gifted and talented pupils. This is being co-ordinated by L. Anderson and extra-curricular challenges are devised to help them extend and broaden their achievements. Through a scheme with Manchester University, boys are encouraged to consider university education and supports their efforts to gain the grades which will enable them to do this. The G&T programme is currently being extended with the help of the "Excellence in Cities" initiative.

Pastoral matters Students are placed into mixed ability tutor groups and daily contact is supported by registration and by daily consultation with subject teachers. This enables form tutors to maintain an informed and caring attitude to the boys in their forms. When necessary, parents will be contacted to discuss any matters concerning a pupil's work, behaviour or well-being.

Behaviour At NMHSB we believe that discipline is of vital importance. Good behaviour is encouraged and is rewarded with praise, merits, certificates and prizes. Our rules are simple and are displayed in every classroom. Sanctions, such as detentions are only imposed as a last resort. We want our boys to feel safe in school and bullying is totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

Attendance Attendance is vital if the boys are to succeed. Good attendance is rewarded and constantly monitored by form tutors and Heads of Year. Recently a home school liaison officer has been employed and parents are informed immediately by phone if a boy is absent and we have been given no explanation. It is vital that parents encourage their sons to attend school.
